Future of cruising: a glimpse into MSC

Cruise liner, MSC Cruises, has offered a glimpse into what their future sailings will look like when they begin to sail again.

Along with unveiling new health and safety measures, they have outlined a dedicated task force that is working with medical experts and authorities to set up new protocols for passengers and crew members.

Initially, their return to sailing will begin with the Mediterranean with plans to start with MSC Grandiosa and MSC Magnifica.

Embarkation

New measures will be implemented prior embarkation, with a universal health screening of all guest. This will include temperature check, a health questionnaire and a COVID-19 swab test. Depending on the outcome of the results, guests may have to have a second screening or test.

Any guests who display symptoms or tests positive will be denied boarding. Crew members will also be regularly tested during their contract, as well as prior to embarkation.

If you are travelling from a country that is categorised as 'high risk', a molecular RT-PCR test will be required 72 hours prior to joining the ship.

There will also be digital check-in, as well as timeslots for embarking to help manage the flow of guests.

On board

There will be a range of new health and safety measures implemented, including:

  • Sanitation; a new cleaning method using "hospital-grade disinfectant products"
  • Social distancing; the cruise line is looking to reduce capacity to 70% to allow for this
  • Food and drink; all restaurants, bars and lounges will be set up for social distancing with menus available on mobiles via a QR code

Dining venus will adhere to new protocols.

Shore excursions

Guests will still be able to explore port destinations, but only as part of a tour organised by MSC. This is to ensure that new measures and protocols are adhered to at the standard set out by MSC. This included sanitised transfers, PPE worn by tour guides and drivers, and visits to sites and venues which have been pre-screened and offer reserved areas for the passengers.

Guests will have their temperature checked before boarding when returning to the ship.
